During our observations of cataloging form use, we noticed that one of the weakness of the multifield (a field with sub-fields) is the inability for the user to view all nested information. This is because only one multifield and its child fields may be opened at one time.
In our continuing redesign of Shared Shelf, we have experimented with a recessed multifield that pushes nested information into rather than onto the page. The result is a stronger visual idea of nested information while preserving the ability to accommodate a large number of fields. This iteration also allows an “at-a-glance” view for users wishing to view many expanded fields.
