Generated Spaces is a virtual reality prototype that allows users to explore images and metadata from the Rijksmuseum with an Occulus Rift headset.
The project was an experiment in going beyond the constraints of screen-based collection exploration. Instead of curating images for a space, we had to generate a space from available images and their metadata.
In our demo, we explored spiraling forms akin to the Guggenheim’s iconic ramp. The structure is defined by a path for the ground and images for walls. Much like a flâneur wandering a vibrant cityscape at night, our goal for a virtual reality application is to allow users to move at their own pace and truly explore rather than consume digital images.
